Benefits of meditation in Buddhist practise-Annual talk series, Tibet House Trust, London


Tibet House Trust, London convened its annual talk series on value of meditation in Buddhist practise and was broadcast on Facebook on 24th October between 11 am-12.30 pm(BST)/4.30-5.30 pm(IST).This talk is being organised yearly for Tibet House Trust generous donors, friends and supporters since its silver jubilee anniversary last year 2019 as token of gratitude and to celebrate its achievements.

 The talk was given by Ringu Tulku Rinpochen, a Tibetan Buddhist Master of the Karma Kagyu school.  He was trained in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism under many great masters including H.H. 16th Gyalwang Karmapa and H.H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and is regarded as one of the most prominent, contemporary Rimé Masters of our time. Rinochen is the Official Representative of His Holiness the 17th Karmapa in Europe and is the Founder of Karmapa Foundation Europe .


The talk was begun with greetings from Tenzin Zeydhan, Secretary Tibet House who moderated the event. Followed by an opening address by Mr. Sonam Tsering Frasi, representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Chairperson of Tibet House Trust, registered charity wing under office of Tibet, London. He explained the audience about the annual series of lectures which Tibet House Trust pledged to hold annually on various topics like Tibetan Buddhism, Tibetan Culture, Tibetan History, Tibetan Literature and so forth. Further, he apprised that since its conception Tibet House has worked towards fulfilment of vision and wishes of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and continues to serve Tibetan population, help them to become self-reliant through huge numbers of projects relating to health, education, cultural, economic and community development needs of Tibet refugee communities in India and Nepal by working closely with departments of Central Tibetan Administration. He mentioned it is the fund raised from individual donors, the European commission, NGOs, big lotteries, relief funds which has made it possible for Tibet House Trust to successfully work towards its aims and objectives. He assured that Tibet House Trust would continue to focus its efforts in strengthening the exile community and for sustenance of Tibetan Culture and identity. 


His eminence Ringu Tulk Rinpochen started the talk with the beginning level of meditation with mentioning what Buddha had said “Do not commit any unwholesome actions, cultivate the wealth of wholesome deeds, train completely our own minds”. Main teaching of Buddha is to do actions of body, speech and mind which is helpful for one selves and other and not to indulge in those which are harmful to one selves and other, for which one’s mind should be trained. Training of mind is not speaking about just thoughts but consists of all your experiences-thinking, emotions, reactions. Every problem, sufferings whether it is in communities, individual’s life are all due to effect of the negative emotions, so one should work on transforming and controlling the negative state of mind into positive state of mind and try to cultivate position actions in one selves , try to do more and more positive actions with kindness and compassion.

Changing the state of mind it is not easy as it is not easy to change your habitual state of mind all of certain as you have been practising for long time but it is possible. With which peaceful mind will be achieved, the joy which will not be a short lived ones like excitements but more natural & kinder type of mind. The temporary peace of mind achieved while training the untrained mind at the beginning state of meditation can be become awakened and trained to experience the limitless kindness and compassion, the experience of enlightenment-the Buddha experience. At that state one will have great clarity, deep immortal wisdom with awakened state of mind. 

To become more peaceful and lessening tensions are not the real objectives of meditations, but the main aim of meditation is transforming one selves completely where we can face any phase of life with having yourselves at stability and peaceful, more with kindness.

By Tibetan Buddhist point , it is to work on transforming ourselves to be more understanding towards each other, for the happiness of whole sentient being. Which require to start transforming oneself first and contributes in other being transformation.

Regardless of what is going in our life or outside world, the best way is to be okey with it and not to focus on the future and past but to focus on present by becoming aware of the nature of the emotions. With more practise one can build up to that level where even a worse situation will not shake up one’s peace of mind. With a trained mind one will become more confident and compassionate towards other as you understand that you are awakened and you can help other in achieving it. Lastly, Rinpochen apprised that it is one of the way of meditation from many which Buddha has taught, Buddha has created many ways as one way cannot be suitable for all.

Rinpochen answered some questions raised during the questions and answers session.
