 LIFE IN TIBETAN SETTLEMENTS

House in Settlements

Housing: Many of the houses build in the seventies need constant rebuilding and renovating. Houses are often made from home made bricks and mud that are easily damaged by strong monsoon rains. The roof tiles are not secure enough in a strong wind and are prone to leaking. As for the wood used for roofing, there are often attacked by topical bugs and termites, they need constant checking and often refitting.

The picture on right shows a newer house with chimneys and on the left a older smaller house.  The houses are probably shared by three family or one large extended family. The stairs to the main doors in these pictures indicate that it sometimes flood during the monsoon season.
