May 2004 Successful Emergency Appeal for Relief to Farmers in Ladakh settlement of Mague Mague is a small Tibetan Nomadic community on the Himalayan borders with Tibet, in Ladakh, North India. The people live a traditional nomadic life style of subsistent animal husbandry, keeping sheep, goats and cattle. Recently an outbreak of an epidemic disease called, "Pestes des Petitis Ruminants" (PPR) effected their livestock of goats and sheep. Nearly 2000 animals perished, an estimated loss about £34,2002 in cost of livestock, potential earnings from wool, dairy and meat for the community. They have appealed to the Tibetan Government-in-exile for help to get the community back on the road to recovery.
The Tibetan Government-in-exile has promised to pay the third (£11,400) of the estimated loss to compensate the farmers and have appeal to the Tibet House Trust for help. The Tibet House Trust has found a generous donor who have kindly covered the cost of the appeal. We are very grateful to the kind donor and many people who have contributed to our Emergency Relief Fund. The Emergency Relief Fund is designed to act quickly to relief any natural or man made disasters.
