Preserving our Identity through our culture.
Tibet has a distinct and rich language and culture, and one of our aims at the Tibet House Trust is to preserve it. We do this by supporting the Department of Religion and Culture and the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. Also in UK we arrange Tibetan reading and writing lessons for young Tibetans as wells as Buddhist teachings for Tibetans in the UK. We also arrange exhibitions and events to promote and present Tibetan cultures. Things we are doing and you can support us too Sponsorship For £13 a month you can help: - an old or destitute monk or nun - a Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts student through their training This will ensure that during some of the hardest periods of their life, they are able to maintain their trainings and lead a humble life. Download a sponsorship application form and please return it us. Tibetan Reading & Writing lessons Every fortnight at the Tibet House young Tibetans living in London can learn Tibetan reading & writing. These classes are free for all Tibetans, at the moment there are two groups, 5-10 years of age and 10-15 years of age, involving 7 children. If other Tibetans want to learn please contact: tsering.gonkatsang@orinst.ox.ac.uk Traditional Music & Dance To preserve our traditional music and dances the Trust works with Department of Religion and Culture. We sponsor students at Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. Also we helped startup a smaller local dance and music schools in Kolegal Tibetan Settlements. Buddhist lessons Buddhist lessons for Tibetans in UK have helped Tibetans not just to reconnect to their old faiths but understand the reasoning and historical background to some of our faiths and religious customs. We have been lucky to have Geshe Tashi la, who is a resident lama at the Jamyang Buddhist centre, Kenningtion, London, to teach it in Tibetan and make it relevant to those living in present situations. Exhibition on Tibetan History/Culture At the present we have a Tibetan Museum Photo Exhibition, detailing the contemporary Tibetan History from 1940s to 1990s. Also previously we have shown the Exile Story, photographs of life in a exile by a young Tibetan photographer, Tsering Dorjee. These photos can be hired if their safety can be guaranteed, please contact us for more details.
